NSIC Weekend : Softball

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University softball team heads west to North Dakota for a pair of key NSIC doubleheaders over the weekend of April 13-14.  Winona State will face the University of Mary at noon on Saturday and will square off against Minot State on Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m.

WINONA STATE STORYLINES, entering the weekend...  
The Warriors are 24-14 overall and 8-4 in the NSIC. 
  
WSU is coming off a 3-1 weekend, splitting with Minnesota Crookston and earning a sweep against Bemidji State. 
 
Head coach Greg Jones reached the 950-win plateau recently against Minnesota State Moorhead. 
 
Abbie Hlas leads the Warriors in doubles (14), is tops in walks (18) and is second in at-bats (127).  
  
Hlas broke Winona State Softball career doubles record earning her 66th double in the Goldey-Beacom game, previously held by Sarah Carlson with 62.   
  
Sam Keller leads Winona State in batting average (.408) and home runs (5).  
  
Kiley Slaats leads the team with stolen bases (10-for-12) is third in hits (49). 
  
Carly Engelhardt has collected 33 RBI's so far this season.   
 
In the circle, Izzy Howe holds an 11-4 record on the year, with Warrior teammate Abby Smith owning a 8-6 mark.   
  
Jayda Berg has made 17 pitching appearances, 14 of which were relief efforts. 
 
Smith leads the Warriors with 97.1 innings in the circle and has 43 strikeouts, Howe has collected 93 strikeouts over 87.2 innings.  
  
Weekend opponent storylines entering the weekend... 
 
UMary is 7-25 overall and has a 0-10 league mark. 
- The Marauders are 0-14 in away games this season. 
- UMary is on a fourteen-game losing streak.  
- Janelle Bergmann leads UMary in batting average (.333). 
- Arria Johnson is 4-6 in the circle and Hannah Chambers is 2-9 overall.  
- Chambers is a perfect 3-of-3 in stolen base attempts.  
 
Minot State is 13-11 overall and has an 8-4 league ledger. 
- The Beavers are 0-5 in road games this season. 
- MSU is on a two-game losing skid. 
- Anna LaCount leads Minot State in batting average (.405). 
- Gabi Dawyduk is 11-7 in the circle and has 5 complete games.

Winona State standout Abbie Hlas was named the 2024 NSIC Preseason WSU Player to Watch this season.  
 
Winona State pitcher Abby Smith was named the 2024 NSIC Preseason WSU Pitcher to Watch.   
 
Greg Jones earned career win 950 on March 30 in a 5-0 shutout of Minnesota State Moorhead. Only 50 NCAA softball coaches across all three levels have reached 1,000 wins.  
 
Winona State has made 15 NCAA Division II Tournament appearances as a program, all with Jones at the helm.
