WOLVES DEFEAT WARRIORS, 30-24

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Winona State football dropped a road contest at Northern State, 30-24.
 
After trailing 17-7, WSU put together a strong third quarter to get right back in the game but despite taking a 21-17 lead as time expired in the third, the Warriors were unable to hold onto the lead. Northern State scored two touchdowns and controlled the ball for much of the final frame to hold on for the one-score victory.
 
Turnovers hurt the Warriors once again, as Northern State earned an interception and recovered a fumble while WSU forced zero turnovers. Winona State rushed for 108 yards and passed for 196 to total 304 yards of offense. NSU outgained WSU on the ground, rushing for 190 yards and the Wolves threw for 135 yards and gained 325 yards of total offense.
 
Northern State converted on a 36-yard field goal to score first in the game, but Winona State answered back later in the first quarter to take a 7-3 lead after a Cole Stenstrom to Joe Sikma nine-yard touchdown pass.
 
The Wolves added two touchdowns early in the second quarter to take a 17-7 lead, which held going into halftime. Winona State's strong third quarter gave the Warriors energy and momentum heading into the final quarter with a 21-17 lead.
 
After scoring on their first drive of the fourth, Northern State forced a punt and then took 6:45 off the clock with an 11-play, 74-yard scoring drive to take a 30-21 lead with just 3:54 left. WSU drove the field and Jacob Scott made a 48-yard field goal to bring the game within one score as 1:11 remained on the clock.

Winona State's onside kick was recovered by Northern State, who was able to run out the clock and hand the Warriors a 30-24 loss.
 
Stenstrom went 13-23 for 196 yards through the air with one touchdown and one interception. Ty Gavin led the Warriors on the ground, rushing for 50 yards on 13 attempts. Cair'ron Hendred added 47 yards on 12 attempts as the duo split carries for the Warriors. Sylvere Campbell grabbed five receptions for 87 yards and Jim Curtin gained 61 yards on three catches to lead the WSU receivers.
 
Nick Bucaro led Winona State with seven tackles. Four Warriors grabbed five tackles each, and Trey Borske led the team with 2.0 tackles for a loss.
 
Winona State (1-3, 1-2 NSIC) will turn their attention to MSU Moorhead (2-2, 2-1 NSIC) as the Warriors host the Dragons on Saturday, October 5 at 1:00pm in Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium.
