WINONA STATE FALLS TO UW-PARKSIDE IN BACK-AND-FORTH CONTEST

KENOSHA, Wis.- The Winona State men's basketball team dropped a tight non-conference tilt against UW-Parkside 77-70.

The Warriors and Rangers dueled it out in a contest that saw nine ties and seven lead changes, but UW-Parkside went on a 15-0 run late in the first half, followed by clutch late game free throws to take down the Warriors.

How it Happened:
Ryan Heise started the game off strong for the Warriors with a layup and three-ball to give the Warriors a 5-0 lead in the first 1:09 of game play. UW-Parkside later took a 10-9 lead on a pair of Luka Mateski free throws with 15:37 left in the first half. Back-to-back buckets by Gavyn Hurley and Heise put the lead back in the Warriors favor at 13-10 with 13:37 to play. The two teams battled to a 22-22 tie after a Ryan Watters layup at 8:22 left on the clock. A couple of Heise free throws gave WSU their biggest lead of the game to make it 31-25 going into the final 5:36 of the first half. The Rangers went on a momentum changing 15-0 run to give them a 40-31 lead with 0:56 left. Aidan Bardic limited the damage, closing the first half with a layup to make it 40-33 UW-Parkside at the halfway point.

The Rangers picked up where they left off extending their lead to 48-38 after a Braden McGlothlin three-pointer with 17:14 remaining. Winona State answered right back with Tyler Mason catching fire going on a solo 9-2 run fueled by two Mason three-pointers and a three-point play cutting the deficit to 50-47 with 15:11 left. WSU jumped back in the lead after a Bardic layup at 11:37 gave the Warriors a 56-55 edge. UW-Parkside later took a 68-62 advantage behind a three-pointer by Paxton Warden with 4:51 remaining in the contest. The Warriors were unable to make it a one score game until a three-ball by Heise cut the Rangers lead to 73-70 with 0:43 remaining. UW-Parkside went four-of-four from the charity stripe in the final 18 seconds to give them a 77-70 victory.

  • The Warriors were 25-of-55 (45.5%) from the field while the Rangers went 23-of-51 (45.1%) in the win.

  • Other Rangers in double figure were Fawaz Surakat (14), Jake Dunham (12), and Mateski (11).
  • Surakat and Mateski led the Rangers with eight rebounds a piece while Joshiah Palmer dished out seven assists.
 
Winona State will head to the Sunshine State to play a couple of games in Lakeland, Fla. They will first take on Florida Southern on November 28th at 7:30pm (EST). On the following day, WSU will play Saint Leo at 5:00pm (EST).
