LAKELAND, Fla.- The Warriors men's basketball team was defeated 81-54 after a huge second half from the Lions.
Winona State kept the game close at 32-31 Saint Leo after the first half. A stellar second half performance from the Lions, which saw them outscore the Warriors 49-23, was the deciding factor in the contest.
How it Happened:
Ryan Heise kicked off the scoring for WSU hitting a three-pointer and back-to-back jumpers to give the squad an early 7-3 lead. An and-one layup from Camden Cerese gave the Lions an 8-7 lead with 14:28 remaining in the half.
Connor Roffers made a layup at 11:17 to keep the game within a bucket at 11-9 SLU. Saint Leo then went on an 8-0 run to make it 19-9 Lions with 9:30 left in the half. A three-pointer by Donovan Hill pushed the Lions in front by 12 at 27-15 at the 6:20 mark. The Warriors later went on an 8-0 run of their own propelled by two buckets by
Gavyn Hurley as well as baskets by Heise and
Tyler Mason to cut the Lions lead to 30-26 with 2:30 remaining in the half. A 5-0 mini-run by Mason cut the Saint Leo edge to 32-31 after the first 20 minutes.
Hurley and Heise connected on back-to-back layups to knot the game at 35-35 with 18:29 remaining. The Lions followed that up with an 11-0 run ending with a Cerese layup pushing the SLU lead to 48-37 with 14:25 remaining.
Tyler Borowski stopped the Lions momentum with a jumper at 13:04. Another strong push by the Lions put them in front by 20 at 63-43 after a couple of Hill free throws.
Kellen Little entered the scorebook with a three-ball to limit the damage to 74-50 Lions at 4:03 remaining. Roffers connected on a late jumper ending the game at 81-54 Saint Leo.
Statistical Comparison:
- The Warriors shot 21-of-57 (36.8%) from the field while the Lions went 29-of-51 (56.9%), including 19-of-26 (73.1%) in the second half.
- Saint Leo won the battle of the boards 34-26.

- Cerese scored a game-high 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting and a solid five-of-seven from three.
- Donovan Hill added 20 points on seven-of-12 shooting and four-of-six from deep. Hill led the Lions with nine rebounds.
- Owen Pawlikowski recorded 15 points in the victory.
Winona State will host Minnesota State University, Mankato in their home opener on Thursday, December 4 at 5:30pm.
