WINONA, Minn. – Winona State student-athletes participated in the annual Trick or Treat for Cans last week and generated a record-setting night for the event hosted by the WSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Student-athletes went door to door across the Winona community and received 3,720 pounds of food as well as monetary donations equivalent to 1,200 pounds for a total of 4,920 pounds of food donated to Winona Volunteer Services and Warrior Cupboard.
"The Winona community and our student-athletes had a record-breaking trick or treat for cans! We brought in over 4920 pounds of food" noted Winona State's SAAC President and WSU volleyball student-athlete, Ellery Apel. "A huge thank you to the community for donating, and to our student athletes for taking their time to go door and making such a big impact to help us fight food insecurity! Your efforts don't go unnoticed!!"
Trick or Treat for Cans rounded out a busy October for Winona State student-athletes. Prior to last week's event, SAAC hosted its annual Warrior Spooktacular in addition to the month-long Fight Like a Warrior t-shirt sales at home events to benefit the Winona Health Mammography Department. As part of the university's commitment to holistic learning and growth, each student-athlete is required to complete four hours of community engagement each year.
