WINONA, Minn. – Winona State Athletics spring break: Tuesday, March 11.
SOFTBALL
WSU (9) – ODU (0):
Winona State opened the day with a convincing 9-0 win over Ohio Dominican. The Warriors strung together a run in the first and another in the second, before exploding for seven runs in the fourth.
Alyssa Woelfel capped off the scoring for WSU on a two-run homer as the Warriors earned the run-rule victory in five innings.
Izzy Howe picked up her 10th win of the season by pitching a complete game shutout and only allowing three hits while striking out seven.
Sam Keller,
Kiley Slaats, and
Tiegan Mancuson each grabbed a pair of hits, while Woelfel and
Logan Anderson had two RBIs.
SMU (2) – WSU (1):
The Warriors scored a run off a
Braelee Jodarski double in the first inning, but Saint Martin's University scored two in the sixth to hand WSU a 2-1 defeat. Winona State scattered eight hits in the ballfame, including three by Slaats and two by Jodarski.
SMU collected 11 hits and two runs off
Jayda Berg, who pitched all seven innings and allowed just the two runs. Winona State will wrap up their spring break trip tomorrow when they play against Wayne State University and Northwood University.
BASEBALL
MSU (10) – WSU (9):
Minot State jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after the top half of the first, but Winona State answered back with two in the bottom half of the inning. The Beavers added three in the third and three more in the fourth to take a 10-2 lead.
The Warriors scored three in the fourth, aided by a two RBI single from
Adam Wall and an RBI double from Garret Hietpas, to cut into the deficit. Two more runs in the sixth and another pair of runs in the eighth brought Winona State within a run, but Minot State hung on for the 10-9 win.
Wall went 4-5 and Hietpas had three hits to lead the Warriors at the plate.
Peyton Lee took the loss for WSU on the mound.
SMSU (10) – WSU (4):
Winona State put a tally on the scoreboard first when
Cole Fuecker singled to score
Tyler Flis in the third inning. Southwest Minnesota State plated four runs in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. WSU added two in the fifth on an
Adam Wall double and another in the seventh to tie it up. SMSU scored sixth in the eighth inning to pull away and win 10-4.
Fuecker and Wall each collected two hits and WSU scattered nine hits as a team.
Drew Lingen started for the Warriors while
Max Strecker took the loss.
