WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University softball team swept Concordia-St. Paul on home dirt after a site reversal due to field conditions.
The Warriors beat the Golden Bears 13-3 in game one and 10-1 in game two.
Game 1: WSU (13) - CSP (3):
The Warriors started off game one with their bats hot with
Logan Anderson hitting a two-run home run followed by
Alyssa Woelfel and
Bryn Elsenpeter hitting back to back solo home runs to put WSU up 4-0 right away in the first. The Golden Bears cut that lead in half in the bottom of the second inning when Lily Burke hit a single to center field to score Ava Blake and Katie Klotz, putting the score at 4-2. In the top of the third, Woelfel decided that one home run wasn't enough for her so she hit another, this time being a two-run home run to put the score up 6-2. In the top of the fourth,
Kiley Slaats hit a sacrifice ground ball to the CSP shortstop to score
Tiegan Mancuso, bringing the score to 7-2 lead. In the fifth inning the Warriors would score again, this time off of a sacrifice pop fly in foul territory, hit by
Braelee Jodarski, which scored Woelfel. CSP would then plate another run in the bottom of the sixth off of a double hit by Alexis Monty, who scored Ella Arendt, putting the score at 8-3. The Warriors would then plate five more runs in the top of the seventh starting with a two-run home run hit by Jodarski followed up shortly after with Fish hitting a single to score Mancuso and on a pickle situation Fish got into and was safe on, Anderson scored to put Winona State up 12-3. WSU wasn't done yet, Elsenpeter hit a double to score Fish to put the Warriors up 13-3. In the bottom of the seventh, the Golden Bears were unable to plate anymore runs giving WSU the victory.
In the circle,
Izzy Howe threw all seven innings collecting four strikeouts and three earned runs against 33 batters faced. At the plate, Woelfel went 4 for 5 with one double, two home runs and four RBIs, Elsenpeter went 2 for 4 with a double and a home run with two RBIs, and Jodarski went 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs.
Game 2: WSU (10) - CSP (1):
The Warriors got on the board right away in game two with Anderson hitting a sacrifice fly to left field which scored
Sam Keller followed by Woelfel hitting a single to left field to score Slaats to put WSU up 2-0. Jodarski started the second inning off with a solo home run followed up by Slaats hitting a sacrifice fly to center field to score Mancuso. Then Anderson steps into the box and hits a double to move Keller to third, who then advances home on a throwing error made by the CSP center fielder. Woelfel then steps up to the plate and hits yet another two-run home run to put the Warriors up 7-0. The Golden Bears get a run across in the bottom of the third with a single hit by Rachel Novack, which scored Riley Rosenthal, cutting the WSU lead to 7-1. In the top of the fifth, Slaats found the grass on the other side of the outfield fence, hitting a three-run home run to extend the lead 10-1. CSP couldn't get any other runners across the plate, giving Winona State the run rule victory.
In the Circle,
Jayda Berg pitched all five innings collecting three strikeouts and only allowing one earned run off of 25 batters faced. At the plate, Slaats went 2 for 2 with a home run and four RBIs, Woelfel went 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs, and Jodarski went 2 for 3 with a home run and a RBIs.
The Winona State University softball team will be back in action at home on Friday, March 28 against Minnesota State Moorhead and again on Saturday, March 29 against Northern State with both doubleheaders starting at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
