WINONA STATE SOFTBALL CLOSES OUT THE WEEKEND WITH A SWEEP

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University softball team swept their final series of the weekend against Northern State Univeristy on Saturday, March 29. 

The Warriors took both games against the Wolves, game one 7-2 and game two 16-1. 

Game 1: NSU (2) - WSU (7): 
Winona State got on the board right away in the bottom of the first after Sam Keller was walked, Kiley Slaats hit a single and both Keller and Slaats advanced bases on the throw. Logan Anderson hit a double to score Keller. Then Alyssa Woelfel hit a sacrifice line out to the right field to score Slaats to put the Warriors up 2-0. In the bottom of the second Braelee Jodarski reached on off of an error made by the pitcher, then Tiegan Mancuso bunted for a single to put runners on first and second. Keller then reached on off of an error made by the second baseman to load the bases. Anderson followed that with also reached on by an error by the shortstop to score Jodarski to put WSU up 3-0. The Warriors continued to ralley up the runs going into the bottom of the fourth when Indigo Fish hit a single up the left side to score Mancuso to put Winona State up 4-0. The Wolves got on the board in the top of the fifth when Eden Ford hit a single to left field to score Brooke Carlson, cutting the score to 4-1. WSU then responded back starting with a double hit by Bryn Elsenpeter followed by a single hit by Jaden Johnson to put the Warriors up 5-1. In the bottom of the sixth Woelfel and Elsenpeter hit back to back solo home runs to extend the WSU lead to 7-1. NSU tried to make a comeback in the top of the seventh when Madi Jones hit a single to score Avarie Eagle, but the Wolves were unable to score any other runs leading to a WSU victory, 7-2. 

In the circle, Izzy Howe pitched all seven innings collecting 10 strikeouts and two earned runs against 33 batters. At the plate, Anderson went 2 for 4 with a double and a RBI, Woelfel went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a home run, Elsenpeter went 2 for 4 with a home run, a double, and a RBI, and Johnson was 2 for 4 with a RBI. 

Game 2: NSU (1) - WSU (16): 
The Warriors got on the board right away again in the bottom of the first with Keller getting walked and moving over to second on a passed ball, Slaats reached on by an error by the second baseman moving Keller to third, and Anderson hit a single to left field to score Keller. Woelfel then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Slaats. Then Jenna James was walked to load the bases, followed by four consecutive walks to score Anderson, Fish, James, and Jodarski to put WSU up 6-0. NSU then got on the board off of a single hit by Courtney Hennen, which scored Emma Owens, putting the score at 6-1. Winona State would add runs to the board in the bottom of the third when Keller hit a double to score Mancuso. Followed by a few pass balls to put Keller on third then across home plate. Woelfel would then hit a single to score Slaats and then James hit a double to score to score Elsenpeter and Woelfel. Jodarski would follow up with a single to move Ashlee Chantos to third and on a fielding error made by the left fielder, Chantos scored to put Winona State up 12-1. The walks continued to work in the Warriors favor when pinch hitter, Zoe May, reached on off of a walk, followed by Kaylie Scanlon getting walked and taking an extra base off of a passed ball. Nora Brandt would then get walked to load the bases. Elsenpeter would then be walked to score May. Followed by Chantos also getting walked to score Scanlon. After a pitching change, Jodarski was then walked to score Brandt. Then to close out the inning, Mancuso grounded out to the first basemen to score Elsenpeter, putting the Warriors up 16-1. The Wolves were unable to get any runs across in the top of the fifth allowing WSU to the victory and the sweep. 

In the circle, Jayda Berg pitched all five innings collecting two strikeouts and one earned run off of 22 batters faced. At the plate, Keller went 1 for 1 with two RBIs and a double, Woelfel went 1 for 2 with with two RBIs, James went 1 for 1 with a double and two RBIs, Jodarski went 1 for 2 with two RBIs, and Mancuso went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs. 

The Winona State University softball team will hit the road to Bemidji on Saturday, April 5 to play Bemidji State and rounding out the weekend in Crookston to play the University of Minnesota Crookston on Sunday, April 6.
