WINONA STATE TAKES FIRST TWO OF NSIC WEEKEND; IZZY HOWE THROWS NO-HITTER

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State University softball team swept today's doubleheader against NSIC opponent, Bemidji State University winning the first contest 6-3, and the second contest 8-0 behing a no-hitter from Izzy Howe.
 
In the top of the fifth inning of the first contest, The Warriors extended their lead to five runs off an error from center field, allowing Indigo Fish and Logan Anderson to score. The Beavers got two runs back with a single from Jillian Johnson and Molly Houts. With the lead proving insurmountable, WSU took home the first contest 6-3. In the day's second contest, Winona State's bats were alive scoring a total of eight runs in five innings. The Warriors would go on to win 8-0 after an outstanding defensive performance led by Izzy Howe's no-hitter in the circle.
 
Game 1 | WSU 6, BSU 3:
 
WSU recorded the first two runs of the contest with a two-run home run to left center field from Kiley Slaats. Answering back in their first at-bats of the contest, BSU recorded one run with a ground-out RBI by Houts allowing Jackie Larsen to cross home plate. Winona State increased the lead to three runs with a two-run home run to right field from Bryn Elsenpeter. Adding insurance runs to the lead in the top of the fifth inning, the Warriors recorded two runs on an error from center field allowing Fish and Anderson to score. Bemidji State got two runs back with a single from Johnson and Houts in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings. With the lead proving insurmountable, WSU took home the first contest 6-3.
 
Game 2 | WSU 8, BSU 0:
 
Winona State recorded the first run of the contest with a double from Anderson. With the bases loaded in the top of the second inning, Sam Keller hit a grand slam to right center field increasing the Warriors' lead to five runs. In their next at-bats, WSU added one more run with a single from Jaden Johnson. Winona State added two insurance runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings with a sacrifice fly from Alyssa Woelfel allowing Keller to cross home plate and a solo home run to left field from Braelee Jodarski. The Warriors would go on to win 8-0 after an outstanding defensive performance led by Howe on the mound.
 
Individual Leaders:
  • In game one, Johnson led the WSU in hits with three. Slaats and Keller led Winona State in RBIs with two each. Slaats and Elsenpeter led the Warriors in home runs with one each. Jayda Berg led WSU on the mound, pitching 5.0 innings and recording two strikeouts.
  • In game two, Anderson led Winona State in hits with three. Keller led the Warriors in RBIs with four. Keller and Jodarski led WSU in home runs with one each. Howe led Winona State on the mound, pitching 5.0 innings and recording five strikeouts.
