WINONA, Minn. – Winona State Athletics spring break: Saturday, March 8.
SOFTBALL
WSU (2) – SRU (0):
Izzy Howe was dominant in the circle for Winona State, allowing just one hit and pitching a complete-game shutout while leading the Warriors to a 2-0 win against Slippery Rock University.
WSU got on the board in the third innings after
Sam Keller hit a triple and was brought in by a
Kiley Slaats sacrifice fly.
Bryn Elsenpeter scored
Alyssa Woelfel on a pinch-hit sacrifice fly in the fourth to bring WSU's second run across the plate.
Jaden Johnson collected two hits for the Warriors while Keller,
Logan Anderson, and
Indigo Fish also recorded hits.
WSU (9) – DC (1):
Winona State jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after 2.5 innings and scored at least one run in all six innings in a 9-1 run-rule victory over Dominican College (NY).
Jayda Berg earned the complete-game win, allowing one run on two hits while striking out two batters.
Ashlee Chantos went 3-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Slaats,
Braelee Jodarski, and
Jenna James each picked up a pair of hits. James hit a homer over the left field fence, and Jodarski and Brandt each hit for a triple.
BASEBALL
WSU (9) – NSU (7):
In their 2025 NSIC opener, Winona State battled to a 9-7 win over Northern State. The Warriors trailed 4-1 after the second inning but runs in the third and fourth brought WSU within one run. In the top of the fifth, Winona State scored four runs with RBIs from
Josh Hatano,
Dylan Harer, and
Ben Hefel.
NSU plated two runs in the sixth and WSU held a one-run lead heading into the ninth.
Payton Beyer connected for a two-out, two-RBI single to give Winona State some insurance runs. Northern State got one back in bottom of the ninth, but
Mason Beltrand was able to close things out as the Warriors took the victory.
Pierce Gritzmaker went 5.0 innings and allowed six runs, just three earned, on seven hits while striking out seven batters to earn the win. Boyd Skelly pitched a solid 3.0 innings in relief, allowing just one hit. Beltrand earned the save after closing out the game for WSU in the ninth.
Cole Fuecker, Hatano, and Harer tallied multi-hit games and Hatano hit a homer to lead the Warriors at the plate.
