WINONA, Minn. – Winona State Athletics spring break: Sunday, March 9.
BASEBALL
WSU (8) – NSU (5):
The Warriors earned an 8-5 win in the first game of today's doubleheader against Northern State. WSU broke the game open after trailing 3-1, scoring three runs in the fourth, a run in the fifth, and three more in the sixth.
Brayden Deering earned the win on the mound for WSU, pitching 1.2 innings in relief and allowing no hits.
Cole Fuecker and
Jess Ondell each had extra base hits while
Ryland Wall led the Warriors with three hits and a walk. Fuecker and Ondell picked up two hits apiece.
WSU (4) – NSU (1):
Winona State put together a great pitching performance behind
Wesley Johnson's first career start to win game two of the doubleheader, 4-1. Winona State plated two runs in the second and two more in the fifth to earn the victory.
Johnson went 4.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out three.
George Henkel earned the win in relief and
Mason Beltrand picked up his second save of the season. Wall went 2-3 at the plate with two RBIs.
Payton Beyer also collected two hits and an RBI.
SOFTBALL
UF (1) – WSU (0):
Winona State and the University of Findlay battled it out in Florida as UF got one run on one hit in the top of the first to earn the 1-0 victory. Findlay plated the game's only run off a sacrifice bunt.
Jayda Berg retired the games final16 batters in order, but the Winona State offense was unable to string together any runs.
Kiley Slaats and
Indigo Fish each collected two hits, while
Zoe May and
Ashlee Chantos picked up WSU's other hits in the game.
IUP (2) – WSU (1):
Winona State and Indiana University of Pennsylvania squared off in another pitcher's duel, going eight full innings before either team brought a run across the plate. In the top of the ninth, IUP scored two runs to take the first lead of the game. Winona State was able to score a run off an
Indigo Fish double, but the comeback fell short with WSU losing 2-1 in extras.
Fish went 3-4 to lead Winona State at the plate as the Warriors scattered 10 hits but left 11 on base.
Izzy Howe was phenomenal in the circle, going 9.0 innings and giving up no earned runs while striking out eight batters.
TENNIS
SRU (7) – WSU (0)
Winona State hung tough with a strong Slipper Rock women's tennis team, falling 7-0.
Clara Thoemke and
Ally Burger fought to a 6-4 defeat at No. 3 doubles while SRU swept the doubles.
In singles play,
Lainy Ristau lost at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-4, against a formerly ranked NCAA DII Amaia Balaguer Brau from Slippery Rock.
Miranda Daulong battled to a 6-0, 6-3 defeat at No. 2 singles.
Skylar Gary and
Nikita Agrawal each grabbed a game from SRU at No. 4 and No. 5 singles.
