WARRIOR SOFTBALL BATTLES THROUGH WEATHER DELAY DEFEATING UMARY

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University softball team battles through a weather delay to defeat UMary on Sunday, April 13 at Maynard R. Johnson Field. 

Game 1| UMary 1- WSU 2: 
The Warriors and the Mauraders took the field under gloomy skies to start the doubleheader with WSU getting on the board in the bottom of the first after the umpires deliberated a homerun hit by Alyssa Woelfel over the left field fence to put Winona State up to an early lead. Both Winona State and UMary battled the rain drops through the majority of the second inning when lightning started pausing the game for a couple of hours. The Warriors finished up their at battle of the second inning and continued game one under blue skies. The game was deadlocked with no other runs getting across until the top of the seventh when Geneveive Hastings hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Kelsey Mischel to tie up the game at 1-1. Winona State loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and Indigo Fish stepped into the box and hit a walk off single up the middle to score Sam Keller to win the game, 2-1. 

In the circle, Jayda Berg pitched all seven innings with one strikeout, five hits and one earned run against 25 batters. At the plate, Keller was 3 for 4, Woelfel was 1 for 3 with a homerun and a RBI, and Fish was 2 for 4 with the walk off and a RBI.

Game 2| UMary 0 - WSU 8: 
The blue skies and the sun stayed out for game two and the Warriors got on the board right away in the first when Fish hit a single to right field to score Keller from second. Right after, Bryn Elsenpeter sent the ball over the outfield fence for a two run homrun to put WSU up 3-0. Winona State kept it going in the second with a sacrifice fly to the right fielder by Logan Anderson to score Tiegan Mancuso. Fish hit yet another RBI single to score Keller to put the Warriors up 5-0 after two innings. WSU wouldn't get on the board again until the bottom of the fifth when Keller was walked to bring in Jaden Johnson followed by a single to the shortstop hit by Woelfel, which scored Braelee Jodarski. And to close out the game, Fish hit a sacrifice fly to the right fielder to score Mancuso to end the game, 8-0. 

In the circle, Izzy Howe pitched all five innings collecting nine strikeouts with only one hit off of 18 batters. At the plate, Woelfel was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Fish was 2 for 3 with three RBIs, Elsenpeter was 1 for 2 with a homerun and two RBIs, Johnson was 2 for 3 with a double, and Mancuso was 3 for 3. 


The Winona State University softball team will be hitting the road to face Southwest Minnesota State in Marshall, Minn. on Friday, April 17 with games starting at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. then traveling to Sioux Falls, S.D. to face off against Augustana University on Saturday, April 18 with first pitches set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
