SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Winona State University softball team drops two hard fought games against the Augustana University Vikings on Saturday, April 19.
Game 1| WSU 1- AU 2:
The Warriors and the Vikings put up a defensive battle through one and a half innings when AU was the first to get on the board. The Vikings' Sidney Smart hit a double to score Stella Harber followed by a single hit by Liz Dierks to score Smart. The defensive battle continued until the top of the sixth when
Logan Anderson hit a double to score
Alyssa Woelfel to cut the deficit in half. WSU came close to tying up the game in the top of the seventh but was unable to get any other runs across, falling 2-1.
In the circle,
Jayda Berg pitched six innings with four strikeouts and six hits against 23 batters. At the plate,
Sam Keller went 2 for 3, Anderson went 1 for 3 with a double and a RBI, and
Ashlee Chantos went 1 for 1.
Game 2| WSU 0 - AU 2:
In similar fashion to game one, Both WSU and AU kept the game a defensive battle through one and a half innings when the Vikings scored first off of a solo homerun hit by Norah Christiansen. Defensively, both
Izzy Howe and Lexi Lander kept the innings short with the help of their defense behind them. The Vikings were able to get on the board again with another solo homerun, this time hit by Desi Cuevas. The Warriors weren't able to cross home plate, falling in game two, 2-0.
In the circle, Howe pitched six innings collecting seven strikeouts with only three hits against 23 batters. At the plate, Keller went 1 for 3, Anderson went 1 for 3,
Kiley Slaats went 1 for 3,
Tiegan Mancuso went 1 for 2.
The Winona State University softball team will be back at Maynard R. Johnson Field on Saturday, April 26 facing Wayne State with first pitches set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and again on Sunday, April 27 against the University of Sioux Falls with games set to start for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
