WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University softball team split against the Golden Eagles from the University of Minnesota Crookston with
Jayda Berg throwing a no hitter in the 11-0 game one win.
Game 1| WSU 11 - UMC 0:
The Warriors were the first to get on the board in the first inning with
Indigo Fish hitting a RBI single to score
Sam Keller.
Alyssa Woelfel followed that with her own RBI single to score
Kiley Slaats and
Jaden Johnson came up to the plate and hit a RBI double to score Fish to put WSU up 3-0. In the top of the second,
Logan Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to left field which allowed
Tiegan Mancuso to score. With bases loaded,
Bryn Elsenpeter was walked to allowing Keller to cross home plate followed by a RBI single hit by Johnson to score Slaats.
Braelee Jodarski reached on off of an error made by the third baseman, which scored Woelfel to put the Warriors up 7-0. In the third inning, Fish hit a single to that scored Slaats, putting Winona State up 8-0. In the top of the fourth, Keller found a gap and earned herself a double scoring
Nora Brandt and
Ashlee Chantos. Slaats then followed with a single to score pinch runner,
Dana Jones, putting WSU up 11-0. The Warriors secured the victory in five innings with
Jayda Berg earning a no hitter in the 11-0 win.
In the circle, Berg pitched five innings collecting three strikeouts and no walks off of 16 batters. At the plate, Keller was 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, Fish was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and Johnson was 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs.
Game 2 | WSU 1 - UMC 2:
Game two turned into a pitchers dual until the top of the fifth when Winona State was the first to score. Woelfel hit a RBI single up the left side that scored Keller for the Warriors to take the lead. The Golden Eagles answered back in the bottom of the fifth with Riley Blake scoring on a passed ball followed by Rayna French hitting a RBI single scoring Whitnee Curry putting UMC up 2-1. The Warriors tried to make a comeback in the top of the seventh, but where unable to get any runs across, falling to Minnesota Crookston 2-1.
In the circle,
Izzy Howe pitched 4.2 innings collecting 10 strikeouts and Berg pitched 1.2 innings collecting one strikeout facing a total of 27 batters. At the plate, Keller went 2 for 3 with two doubles, Fish went 2 for 3 with a double, and
Jenna James went 2 for 3.
The Winona State University softball team will face off against Minnesota State, Mankato in a midweek match up on Wednesday, April 9 with first pitches set for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at Maynard R. Johnson Field.
