WINONA, Minn. – Winona State fell to Augustana University 34-26 in a road matchup in Sioux Falls, S.D.
The Warriors struck first on a field goal, but the Vikings handled the Warriors the rest of the way to win 34-26.
How it Happened:
The Warriors jumped out to 3-0 lead after a
Evan Swanstrom 33-yard field goal with 9:14 left in the first quarter.
Caleb Jannsen blocked a 42-yard field goal by Jake Pecina with 5:49 left in the quarter. Both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the first quarter.
The Vikings took the lead after a 10-yard rushing touchdown by Levi Teetzel with 12:05 left in the first half. The Vikings extended the lead after a Gunnar Hesley 15-yard pass to Jacob Remmert to put the Vikings up 14-3 with 6:10 left in the first half. The Warriors Caleb Janson forced a fumble to set up a short field for the Warriors with 2:04 left in the first half. Three plays later, a 40-yard bomb from
Jackson Flottmeyer to
James Durst cut the Vikings lead to 14-10. The last play of the half saw a 41-yard pass from Hensley to Klayton Sattler to put the Vikings up 21-10 after one half.
The Vikings opening drive resulted in a 23-yard field goal from Jake Pecina to add to the Vikings lead, to put them up 24-10. After a punt by the Warriors, Augustana scored two plays later on a Sattler TD from Hensley to put the Vikings up 31-10 with 7:09 left in the third quarter. Another punt by the Warriors set up another field goal from Pecina to extend the Vikings lead to 34-10 after three quarters.
A quick six-play, 75-yard drive from the Warriors capped off by a
Joe Sikma seven-yard receiving touchdown cut the lead 34-16 with 14:09 left in the game. The Warriors forced a three & out on the Vikings ensuing drive. Another Swanstrom field goal put the Warriors down two scores at 34-19 with 7:52 left in the game. WSU cut it to a one-score game on a Flottmeyer 16-yard pass to
Jim Curtin with 0:38 left in the game. The Vikings recovered the following onside kick the end the Warriors upset bid.
