WINONA, Minn. – Winona State Athletics Spring Break: Tuesday, March 10th.
SOFTBALL
WSU (6) – WCU (4)
Winona State and West Chester each cruised through the first two innings defensively, knotting a 0-0 tie. In the third, Winona State was able to put runners on base and balls put in play by
Lila McNeill and
Indigo Fish plated a pair of runs. WSU held the lead until West Chester scored four runs on two outs in the fourth inning. The Warriors answered right back in the fifth, scoring two after a pair of McNeill and Fish ground out RBIs. WSU added another in the sixth and an insurance run in the seventh to earn the win 6-4.
Ashley Theisen earned the win after entering the game in relief and pitching 3.1 innings while striking out six and allowing just two hits.
Alyssa Woelfel garnered two hits and scored a pair of runs while Fish also picked up two hits and added an RBI.
WSU (5) – NSU (4)
After taking a 4-0 deficit through two innings, Winona State clawed back and scored four unanswered runs, including a walk-off in extra innings to earn the 5-4 win over Nova Southeastern. NSU was able to connect at the plate off of WSU's
Jayda Berg in the first two innings, scoring four runs on five hits. Berg was able to settle in and allowed five hits throughout the rest of the contest as the Warrior offense picked up to give Berg the win in the circle.
The Warriors grabbed their first run of the game in the fourth, then WSU added two more in the fifth as
Bryn Elsenpeter scored on a wild pitch before
Hannah Soderbeck drove in Fish on a single. Down one with just two outs to play with, Elsenpeter doubled to left then McNeill doubled to center to tie the ballgame at four apiece. In the eighth,
Lauren Volling put down a sacrifice bunt to move
Maddie Parker to third, then
Ashlee Chantos provided a walk-off sac fly to win the game.
TENNIS
WCU (4) – WSU (3)
Winona State battled with West Chester this morning. The match started with singles and WSU jumped out to an early lead by winning at No. 1 and No. 4 singles.
Lainy Ristau grinded out a three-set victory by winning the second set 6-2 and taking the super tiebreaker.
Izabel Barr rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles.
Ally Burger tallied the third win for the Warriors at No. 5 singles to make the match tied 3-3 heading into doubles play.
With the deciding point on the line, the West Chester clinched the match by taking all three doubles matches to win the doubles point and defeat the Warriors 4-3.
NU (7) – WSU (0)
Winona State closed out their day with a tough matchup against Northwood University. Northwood took each doubles match by scores of 6-1. In singles play, WSU was unable to grab any momentum, and Northwood took all singles matches in two sets to earn the 7-0 win.
BASEBALL
EC (11) – WSU (4)
Winona State was unable to overcome an early deficit against Eckerd College. Eckerd plated six runs in the second inning, which ended up being enough to win the ballgame. The Warriors fought back with a pair of runs in the third as
Josh Hatano drove in
Connor Greuel and
Christian Varsho scored after an error.
Eckerd added runs in each of the next four innings to halt WSU's momentum and jump out to an 11-2 lead. The Warriors added a run in each of the eighth and ninth innings, both on wild pitches, to bring the final score to 11-4 in favor of Eckerd.
Easton Arendt took the loss after going 2.0 innings as the starter.
Carson Jones,
Logan LaPlante, and
Peyton Lee each pitched a pair of innings throughout the game. Arendt, who started the game on the mound and also led off the Warrior lineup, garnered two hits and a walk to lead the WSU offense.
