WINONA STATE ATHLETICS SPRING BREAK: SUNDAY, MARCH 8

WINONA, Minn. – Winona State Athletics Spring Break: Sunday, March 8th.

SOFTBALL
WSU (9) – GU (4)
Winona State created havoc early against Gannon University, as Lila McNeill hit a two-run blast over the fence in the top of the first, then WSU plated another run when Whitley Wischmeier put the ball in play and reached on an error. The Warriors tallied another run in the fourth before Gannon finally put a tally on the board to make it 4-1 through four innings. WSU added another crooked number on the scoreboard in the fifth, highlighted by a Braelee Jodarski homer, to plate four more runs in the inning and open the game up. WSU held on for the 9-4 victory.

Ashley Theisen collected the win in another impressive outing, striking out 13 batters and allowing just five hits. Indigo Fish and Jodarski led WSU with three hits apiece.

UI (2) – WSU (1)
A two-run first frame by the 11th ranked team in the nation proved to be enough as UIndy garnered the 2-1 victory. Jodarski brought in Jaden Johnson on a double to left field in the second to cut the deficit in half, but WSU was unable to get timely hitting throughout the rest of the game as they stranded eight runners on base in the one-run defeat.

Jayda Berg settled in after the first inning, not giving up another run in the loss. The Warriors strung together seven hits throughout the game, led by Tiegan Mancuso, Ashlee Chantos, and Alyssa Woelfel each grabbing a pair.

BASEBALL
AU (12) – WSU (3)
Winona State started with a run in each of the first three innings, jumping out to a 3-0 lead before Ashland plated six in the third and never looked back to take the 12-3 victory. Boone Kirst drove in Garrett Hietpas on an RBI single in the first. Ethan Patterson hit a solo shot in the second and then Patterson scored Kirst on a groundout in the third. Ashland scored runs in the third, fifth, seventh, and eighth innings to hand WSU the loss.

Wesley Johnson took the loss after going 3.0 innings and giving up six runs in the start. Max Pederson and Kirst led WSU with two hits while Patterson tallied a pair of RBIs.

Winona State tennis opened their Spring Break trip with a tough loss to East Stroudsburg at the USTA Campus in Orlando, Fla. ESU took the doubles point with ease by scores of 6-1, 6-2, and 6-2.
