WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State softball team swept the Wayne State Wildcats in a doubleheader to start weekend.
In a doubleheader against WSC, Winona State would take both high intensity games. Game one would end with a score of 4-2 in favor of the Warriors and in game two the WSU offense would clutch up to win 5-4.
Game One: WSU (4) – WSC (2)
The Wildcats would strike first in game one. After a slow start offensively for both teams, WSC would score two runs in the third inning. Not until the fifth inning were the Warriors able to answer back with a two RBI double by
Ashlee Chantos scoring
Braelee Jodarski and
Dana Jones.
In the sixth inning,
Indigo Fish would reach on a throwing error by Wayne State and
Tiegan Mancuso would capitalize on the same error with a run scored. Also in the sixth, Jodarski would ground out to first, but
Bryn Elsenpeter would score on the play leading Winona State to a 4-2 victory.
Ashley Theisen would lock in the win with seven strikeouts in 3.1 innings and
Jayda Berg would earn her second save on the season.
Game Two: WSU (5) – WSC (4)
After a perfect start by Wayne State, WSU found themselves down 3-0 going into the bottom of one.
Alyssa Woelfel would chip away at the lead with a solo shot to right field to make the score 3-1. In the third, Chantos would score on an electric wild pitch play to make the score 3-2.
It was all Warriors in the fourth inning with three runs being scored and the first lead of the game being secured. Chantos, Woelfel, and Mancuso would all be credited with RBIs and
Hannah Soderbeck, Jodarski and Chantos would all score as well. Berg secured her 15th win of the season with two strikeouts.
Winona State will be in action next on Saturday, April 11th at 12:00pm and 2:00pm at Maynard Johnson Field against the Augustana Vikings.
