WARRIORS CONQUER VIKINGS IN DOUBLEHEADER DOMINANCE

WINONA, Minn. – The Warrior softball team swept the Augustana Vikings in a doubleheader to end weekend.

In a doubleheader against Augie, Winona State would take care of business in both games. Game one was a close battle with WSU pulling out the 9-8 win. In game two, Winona State would dominate, winning 10-6.

Game One: WSU (9) – AUGIE (8)
The Warriors would strike first in game one with Bryn Elsenpeter hitting a single up the middle to score Tiegan Mancuso. In the same inning, Braelee Jodarski would hit a grand slam giving WSU an early 5-0 lead. Augustana would chip away at the Warrior lead in the second inning but after a couple Ashlee Chantos and Alyssa Woelfel RBI singles in the bottom of the third, WSU would gain a 9-3 lead.

Izzy Howe would start game one but would only pitch the first inning. Ashley Theisen would relieve Howe, followed by a Jayda Berg close. The Vikings would make things interesting in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs but would ultimately fall short and Winona State would pick up the 9-8 victory.

Game Two: WSU (10) – AUGIE (6)
Just like game one, Winona State would start strong in the first inning of the back of a Woelfel solo shot to right center. Augie would quickly tie the game up in the second inning making the score 1-1 going into the third. In the bottom of three, both Chantos and Woelfel would score off back-to-back wild pitches and would be followed up by a Jodarski RBI single and Indigo Fish three run shot to left field.

Adding insurance runs in the fourth and sixth innings, Woelfel would hit her second home run of the game and Fish would hit a two RBI single up the middle to allow for a 10-3 Warriors lead going into the top of the seventh inning. Even with giving up three runs in the seventh, Berg was able to handle business and end the game with a 10-6 win for WSU.

The Warriors will be in action next on Friday, April 17th with first pitch scheduled for 2:00pm at Concordia-St. Paul in a doubleheader thriller.
