WINONA STATE TAKES DOWN GOLDEN BEARS IN TOP NSIC MATCHUP

WINONA, Minn. The Winona State Warriors softball team was able to grab both wins in a doubleheader against CSP.

In a doubleheader against Concordia-St. Paul, Winona State would capitalize on strong defense and reliable offense to win both games with score of 3-2 and 4-3, respectively. Winona State remains atop the NSIC with an 18-2 record in the conference.

Game One: WSU (3) – CSP (2)
The Warriors would strike first in game one with an Indigo Fish RBI double that would score Teigan Mancuso and give WSU an early 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Braelee Jodarski showed her explosiveness with an RBI double of her own, scoring Fish and giving Winona State a 2-0 run lead.

The final run for the Winona State offense came from a Jaden Johnson RBI single up the middle in the fourth inning. With all four runs coming in the fourth inning for the Warriors, Concordia-St. Paul would try and chip away with a solo shot in the bottom of four, and a RBI double in the bottom of the sixth. With Izzy Howe starting the game and pitching 5.0 inning with 2 strikeouts, Ashley Theisen would come in the sixth inning to finish the game and get the save.

Game Two: WSU (4) – CSP (3)
The Golden Bears were able to attack early, scoring the first inning and homering in the bottom of two to give CSP a 2-0 lead. Even with Concordia-St. Paul scoring again I the bottom of the third inning, WSU had the answer in the fourth, scoring three runs with Hannah Soderbeck, Ashlee Chantos, and Alyssa Woelfel all receiving RBIs.

The last score would come in the top of the fifth inning off a CSP fielding error that would score Fish and give Winona State a 4-3 lead. Jayda Berg would get the start and the win in game two, moving her record to an astounding 17-2. Berg finished the game with four strikeouts and only one walk in seven innings pitched.

Winona State will be in action next on Sunday, April 19th against the St. Cloud State Huskies with game one scheduled for 1:00pm in Winona, Minn.
