WINONA, Minn. – The WSU softball team split their doubleheader with SCSU with scores of 4-0 and 0-5.
The Warriors won 4-0 in the first game of today's twin bill, then fell short in game two, losing with a score of 5-0. A complete game from pitcher
Izzy Howe led Winona State to their win in game one.
Game One: WSU (4) – SCSU (0)
In a limited offense affair, the first four innings would find no runners on either team crossing home plate. Winona State would score the games first and only runs all in the fifth inning.
Ashlee Chantos drove in two runs on a two RBI single to left center, scoring
Hannah Soderbeck and
Madi Rowe.
Later in the fifth inning,
Bryn Elsenpeter would collect an RBI single up the middle scoring Chantos. To add the pressure to the Huskies offense,
Lila McNeill would tac on one more run after an RBI single to second base scoring
Alyssa Woelfel. There would be no more runs scored as pitcher Howe would secure the shut-out win with eight strikeouts and only allowing two hits.
Game Two: SCSU (5) – WSU (0)
Unfortunately, in game two it was all St. Cloud State. The Huskies would score three runs in the third inning and add two more runs in the top of the sixth. Winona State was only able to get one hit, which came from McNeill in the bottom of two.
Pitcher
Jayda Berg would collect only her third loss of the season after giving up three runs and would be relieved by
Ashley Theisen in the top of the fourth inning. Combined, the duo would earn only two strikeouts and give up 11 hits.
Winona State (40-7, 19-3 NSIC) remain atop the NSIC standings and will play at Bemidji State on Saturday, April 25th in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 12:00pm.
