DULUTH, Minn. – The Warrior softball team shut out the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs in game one with a score of 9-0 but would fall short of the sweep, falling 5-0 in game two.
The Winona State softball team took down the Bulldogs in game one with a score of 9-0 off elite pitching and stellar defense. The Warriors would fall short of the sweep getting shut out themselves in a 5-0 game two.
Game One: WSU (9) – UMD (0)
In game one of the twin bill against the Bulldogs, Winona State was able to secure the shutout win at the hands of pitcher
Izzy Howe. Howe received her 16th win of the season and racked up eight strikeouts while only giving up two walks.
Bryn Elsenpeter started off the WSU bats with an RBI double to right center field that would score
Alyssa Woelfel early in the first inning.
Lila McNeill and Woelfel would both find themselves with sacrifice RBIs to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead after two.
Indigo Fish sent an electric solo shot to right center in the third inning making the Warriors lead, 3-0. Elsenpeter would also find the barrel of the bat in the seventh inning sending her second home run of the weekend over the left field fence, scoring
Tiegan Mancuso and Woelfel. Finishing with some insurance runs from a
Braelee Jodarski RBI single and a
Ashlee Chantos RBI single, the Warriors would win game one 9-0.
Game Two: UMD (5) – WSU (0)
The Warriors were unable to find themselves on the positive side of the scoreboard with Minnesota Duluth scoring in the first inning, third inning and sixth inning. Woelfel, Mancuso, and McNeill along with Whitely Wischmeier were the only Warriors to collect a hit. Pitcher
Jayda Berg would get the start and after 5.1 innings pitched and three strikeouts, Berg would be relieved by
Ashley Theisen for the final half inning of WSU defense. Berg would collect the loss moving her to 18-4 on the season and the Warriors would fall 5-0.
Winona State (43-8, 22-4 NSIC) are set to play next on Saturday, May 2nd at 1:00pm against the Minnesota State Moorhead Dragons in a doubleheader.
