WINONA, Minn. --- The Winona State women's soccer team took an early lead but fell to Jamestown 2-1 at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium on Friday afternoon.
The Jimmies improved to 1-2-1 on the season, while the Warriors fell to 0-3.
McKayla Paukner scored the lone goal for the Warriors, while
Madison Barnick and
Kyleigh Jannisch each recorded two shots on goal.
Cora Nothem and
Chloe Turner each added one shot on goal.
The Warriors took their first shot of the game 13:37 into the match when Barnick broke through the defense and sent a shot toward the low center of the goal. The Jimmies looked to answer five minutes later but missed just high over the crossbar.
Turner recorded the Warriors' second shot on goal of the day, aiming low center, but Jamestown made the save. Winona State continued to apply offensive pressure, with Paukner scoring just inside the right goalpost with 10 minutes remaining before halftime.
Jamestown looked to strike back early in the second half, missing left on its first attempt four minutes into the half. The Jimmies took their second shot of the half with 33 minutes remaining but missed high.
Nothem recorded her first shot of the game with 26:50 remaining, sending an attempt from the right side that resulted in a Jimmies save. The Warriors looked to take advantage of a free kick from just outside the box at the 23:25 mark, but Jamestown knocked the ball out of play, resulting in a Warriors corner kick.
Jamestown tied the game with 21:27 remaining when midfielder Breanna Oettle found the back of the net. The Jimmies then took advantage of a counterattack with 11:41 left in the game, as Julliet Lopez scored to give Jamestown a 2-1 lead.
Barnick looked to tie the contest with a pair of shots with five minutes remaining, but both attempts sailed just high. Jannisch took one final chance to tie the game off a corner kick, but the Jimmies made the save and held on for the 2-1 win.
