WAYNE, Neb. --- The Winona State football team will look to carry its momentum to Wayne State this week, taking on the Wildcats on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m.
The Warriors picked up their first win against a nationally ranked opponent last week in four years, taking down Augustana 42-41 in overtime. It also marked the first time since 2022 that WSU defeated the Vikings. Wayne State looks to extend its winning streak to three games, after defeating Southwest Minnesota State 38-24 last week.
ABOUT THE WARRIORS
- Winona State and Wayne State will face off for the 28th time in program history on Saturday. The Warriors are 23-5 all-time against the Wildcats and are looking to repeat last year's victory.
- Sophomore QB Jacob Sampson completed 28 of 44 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns last week vs No. 20 Augustana. Sampson also led the warriors on the ground with eight rush attempts for 89 yards and a touchdown.
- Sophomore WR Jake Schultz grabbed 10 receptions for 115 yards on the day.
- Winona State's offense was dominant with three rushing touchdowns and two receiving touchdowns.
- Freshman defensive back Kevin Lewis led the Warriors' defense with four solo tackles, four assisted tackles, and an interception.
- Freshman kicker Mathias Yaggie was perfect on the night with two made extra points and two field goals. Yaggie was named NSIC Specialist of the Week after his performance.
- This is the second season under the leadership of Head Coach Brian Curtin. Curtin, who has been a part of the Winona State football staff since 1997.
- The Warriors are now 2-2 in conference play and 2-3 on the season after their home win against No. 20 Augustana.
ABOUT THE WILDCATS
- Wayne State picked up its second consecutive win last week, defeating Southwest Minnesota State 38-24 in Marshall, Minn.
- The Wildcats are averaging 30.2 points per game, while allowing 19.80 per game
- Brady McGill leads the passing attack, completing 74-of-135 passes for 1,057 yards, with seven touchdowns and one interception.
- Dawson Forgy leads WSC on the ground with 74 carries for 466 yards and six touchdowns.
- Defensively, Kaden Johnson has produced 35 tackles, with 15 solo stops, 3.5 tackles for loss, three pass breakups, and 1.5 sacks.
