Prior to coming to Gustavus, Cosgrove served as a graduate assistant at St. Cloud State University for two years.

A 2005 graduate of St. Cloud State with a degree in mass communications, Cosgrove was a standout defensive end for the Huskie football squad, earning All-Conference honors three times and being named to the National Football Coaches Association All-America Team in 2005. He was also named the North Central Conference Defensive Lineman of the Year his senior season. In St. Cloud State football history, Cosgrove graduated ranked first in tackles for loss (47.5) and quarterback hurries (28), and second in sacks (23.5) and forced fumbles (7).

Coach Bergstrom noted, "We are thrilled to have Coach Cosgrove join our football staff and family. It has been so rewarding to watch Charlie grow since his time as a player at Saint Cloud State University, to coaching with him at Gustavus Adolphus College, to now reuniting with him again at Winona State University.    He will bring energy, expertise, and experience to our OL and offense.  He is a first-class man, husband, dad, friend, and coach.  He has an amazing support staff at home and will be joined in Winona by his wife (Liz) and three children (Luella, Vincent, Gordon).
