WINONA, Minn. – Despite giving up multiple goals for the first time this season, the Winona State soccer team recorded a trio of goals of their own to beat visiting University of Mary 3-2 on a chilly Sunday at Warrior Stadium.
Mary scored first in the 18th minute off a corner kick that found a scrum of players in front of the net and the Marauders' Elizabeth Patterson was able to put the ball in the net for a 1-0 lead.
It didn't take long for the Warriors to answer, as senior
Alaina Kne scored her first goal of the season off an assist from
Kati Baker and
Cailyn McCauley just four minutes later to knot the score at 1-1.
The Warriors struck again just before halftime with
Meg Riebau found the back of the net in the 43rd minute thanks to an assist from
Madalyn Jansen and
Hayley Bach for a 2-1 lead heading into the break.
The Warriors added a much-needed insurance goal in the 49th minute when
Darian Molter scored her team-leading fourth goal of the year off a long pass from
Devon Richards to make it 3-1.
The 3-1 advantage would hold until the 71st minute, when WSU goalkeeper
Rachel Oleson misplayed a ball in the box and Mary's Sabra Bertsch was able to put the ball in the net to cut the Warrior lead in half at 3-2, but the Warrior defense was able to shut down the Marauders from that point on.
Oleson gave up more than one goal for the first time all year, but still made four saves to collect her ninth win of the season in a very solid freshman campaign.
Baker racked up five shots in the game – the most from either team – while putting two on goal to lead the Warriors, while Kne, Richards and Molter each had two.  As a team, the Warriors outshot the Marauders 16 to 11 while putting seven on goal compared to Mary's six.
Winona State (9-1, 6-1 NSIC) hits the road next weekend for a pair of matchups against MSU Moorhead and Northern State on Saturday and Sunday.
