WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State soccer team scored a late goal but it wasn't enough as it fell to No. 6 Minnesota State Friday night at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium.
Down 2-0 with two and a half minutes remaining, freshman Abby Bohanski scored her eighth goal of the season when Mehan Bolton dished a pass to the left side that Bohanski caught in stride before sneaking it just inside the right post and out of the reach of MSU goalkeeper Lauren Hoeppner. But it was too late to mount a comeback, as the Mavericks closed out the 2-1 victory.
MSU got on the board in the 53rd minute when Kiana Nickel headed a ball in with an assist from Korey Kronforst. The same situation unfolded 10 minutes later when Knonforst again found Nickel for what would prove to be the game winner.
The two teams were fairly even in the stat sheet, as the Mavericks had 21 shots while WSU had 20. Eight of MSU's shots were on goal, while the Warriors had seven.
Each team had six saves, while the Mavericks had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
Bohanski led the Warriors with six shots, three of which were on goal. Meg Riebau added five shots with one landing on goal, while Bolton, Kati Baker and Chase Rehm also posted a shot on goal.
Winona State (11-4-2, 8-4-2 NSIC) ends its regular season Sunday when it travels to Concordia-St. Paul to take on the Golden Bears at 1 p.m. at Sea Foam Stadium.
