No. 24 Warriors Host MSU Moorhead, No. 8 Northern State

The No. 24 Winona State volleyball team continues its four-game homestand this weekend when it faces the MSU Moorhead Dragons Friday night before hosting the No. 8 Northern State Wolves for a 4 p.m. matchup on Saturday.

LAST WEEK: The then-No. 25 Warriors split a pair of home matchups, sweeping past Sioux Falls 3-0 before a 3-1 setback against the No. 5 Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs.

A LOOK AT THE DRAGONS: MSU Moorhead comes into McCown Gym with an 11-4 record and a 4-3 mark in NSIC play. The Dragons are led by senior middle blocker Kaitlin VanWinkle, who's in the top 10 in three different categories in the NSIC - ninth in hitting percentage (.344), ninth in kills per set (3.39) and eighth in blocks per set at (1.05). MSUM is coached by Tammy Blake, who's in her 21st season as head coach of the Dragons at the helm.

A LOOK AT THE WOLVES: No. 8 Northern State enters the weekend with an unblemished 15-0 record, with a 7-0 mark in NSIC play. The Wolves are atop the NSIC in hitting percentage (.373), opponent hitting percentage (.104), assists (14.21 per game) and kills (14.98 per game). Sophomore Kellie Schmitt (.544), and seniors Cari McGarvie (.464) and Kelsey Chambers (.424) hold the league's top three spots in hitting percentage.

THREE STRAIGHT RANKINGS: The Warriors were rewarded for their win over Concordia with the program's first ever top 25 ranking when the latest AVCA Top 25 Poll was released three weeks ago. WSU debuted at No. 22 in the poll, and after dropping to No. 25 last week, jumped back up to No. 24 in the latest poll.

THE BIG UPSET: The Warriors got the cliched monkey off their back, downing No. 3 Concordia-St. Paul 3-1 last Saturday afternoon in the Warriors' home opener. It was the first win over the Golden Bears in 25 tries dating back to Oct. 24, 2000.

MORE GOAR: Outside hitter Taylor Goar is in the midst of a strong sophomore campaign, leading the Warriors in kills (185) and kills per set (3.85). She's also got the job done from the service line, compiling 18 aces in 48 sets for a .38 ace-per-game average.

HITTING DUO: Taylor Goar and opposite hitter Danielle Rampart continue to make up an impressive offensive tandem, as both rank in or near the top 10 in the NSIC in kills. Goar is fifth in the NSIC with 3.85 per game, while Rampart's 3.15 is just outside the top 10 after ranking in the top 10 for most of the year.
