WINONA, Minn. – The No. 25 Winona State volleyball team swept No. 20 Augustana 3-0 Friday night in McCown Gymnasium.
The Warriors, who earned their third win of the season over a nationally-ranked opponent, rolled to relatively easy victories in the first two sets, earning 25-16 and 25-15 wins, before needing to rally for a 25-23 win to finish off the final set and get the sweep.
Maria Fruechte led the Warriors, recording a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs while hitting a strong .320 for the match. Taylor Goar led all players with 14 kills and hit .286.
McKenna Larsen tallied a match-high 35 assists with seven kills and nine digs while hitting .545, and Jamie Cairncross added a match-high 18 digs.
After an early 7-6 lead for Augie in set one, WSU picked up the pace with a 5-1 run to take an 11-8 lead. Soon after, a 6-0 WSU spurt upped the lead to 18-10 and provided plenty of cushion to earn the 25-16 win.
A 5-0 run early in set two set up by four consecutive Viking errors gave WSU a quick 9-3 advantage. Augustana rattled off four straight points to cut the WSU lead to 13-10, but the Warriors answered with four points of their own capped off with an ace by Larsen to up the lead back to 17-10 and WSU cruised to the 25-15 win.
The Warriors hit .394 and .265 in the first two sets, while holding the Vikings to .079 and .065.
The Warriors were forced to mount a rally in the final set as Augie jumped out to a big 10-2 lead. The lead was 14-6 when WSU put together an important 5-0 run, with the last four coming on the strength of four straight kills from Goar, to cut the deficit to 14-11. Augie still clung to a 21-19 lead before back-to-back kills from Lauren Kudronowicz and Goar brought it even at 21 apiece. An ace from Larsen gave WSU its first lead of the set at 23-22 and Goar and Larsen finished it off with consecutive kills for the 25-23 comeback win.
No. 25 Winona State (17-9, 11-8 NSIC) closes the regular season Saturday with a 4 p.m. matchup against No. 4 Wayne State in McCown Gymnasium.
