ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Winona State gymnastics team posted a season-best score of 185.950 and needed all of the strong performance to squeak past Hamline's score of 185.000 Tuesday evening in St. Paul.
Cassidy Kleven led the Warriors with a meet-best score of 9.600 on the balance beam, topping her previous high of 9.375 in the event set in last week's home meet against Gustavus. Kathryn Pipp added a 9.300 in the event while Brooke Hiestand added a 9.275.
The Warriors turned in their strongest team performance of the night on the vault, as all six gymnasts hit their marks with at least a 9.225 and took four of the top six spots overall. Jade Donaldson led the Warriors with a second-place finish with a score of 9.475. Emily Goldeman took third with a 9.450 while Taylor Lewis added a 9.400, Hiestand scored a 9.350 and Joanna Reale and Veronica Peterson each received scores of 9.225.
The Warriors also took four of the top five spots on the unevent bars including the two best scores. Senior Danielle Thenell won the event with a score of 9.450 while Olivia Cattelino finished second with a 9.350. Pipp added a 9.225 and Jade Donaldson finished with a 9.200.
Despite Hamline claiming the four best scores in the floor exercise, the Warriors still managed a slight edge in the team score as WSU used six solid scores to earn places four through 10. Pipp was the top Warrior finisher with a 9.350, while Hiestand added a 9.325, Jessica Gabriel and Peterson each scored a 9.300 and senior Melanee Pfautz finished with a 9.125.
Donaldson was the only gymnast who competed in the All-Around, finishing with a 36.550.
Winona State is back in action Sunday at the Best of Minnesota meet as they go head-to-head against Hamline, Gustavus and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
