Box Score 2 ROSEMONT, Ill. – The No. 25 Winona State softball team came up with a pair of victories Friday at The Dome at the Ballpark, beating Saginaw Valley 10-1 in five innings before downing No. 15 Wayne State (Mich.) 4-3 in 8 innings.
In the opener,
Ashley Walker continued her fantastic start to the season, compiling four hits at the plate along with a pair of RBI in four at bats. Also the game's starting pitcher, Walker tossed five innings, while giving up six hits and striking out three along with just one earned run.
Walker got things started at the plate with an RBI single up the middle to score
Reed Karsten and put WSU up 1-0 after one inning.
Morgan Lintz came up with an RBI single up the middle as well in the third to score Walker for a 2-0 lead, while
Allyson O'Herron also had an RBI and
Natalie Kalmes brought home a run with a walk as part of a three-run third inning and a 4-0 WSU lead.
The Warriors put the game out of reach in the fifth with a six-run inning as the Warriors cruised to the 10-1 victory.
The Warriors returned to the dome for the nightcap, where WSU faced its stiffest competition of the young season in No. 15 Wayne State (Mich.). Winona State struck first with an RBI from Walker to pull ahead 1-0. Wayne State later tied it up in the second inning to knot the score at 1-1.
Wayne State then moved ahead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 advantage – a lead it would hold until Winona State responded in the sixth when Walker again came through with an RBI to plate Karsten.
Jessica Kullmann then drove home
Lexi Perez with a single to center to tie it up at 3-3.
It took extra innings to decide the game, and Winona State would get first crack at it with Karsten starting the inning on second base with international tiebreaker rules in effect. That set up the game-winning single to center field from Walker to give Winona State the 4-3 lead, and
Hanna Lythberg then shut the door on the other Warriors in the bottom of the inning to seal the victory.
Lythberg went eight innings while allowing four hits, three runs and striking out four.
Winona State is back in action Saturday with a 1:30 p.m. game against Wisconsin-Parkside followed by an 8 p.m. matchup with Findlay in Rosemont.
