HOUSTON – Andrew Geislinger and Tyler Nehring each hit home runs at Minute Maid Park, but the Warriors fell to St. Mary's (Tex.) 11-3 Saturday evening in Houston.
After St. Mary's took a 1-0 lead in the second inning with an unearned run on an RBI single, WSU answered back in the top of the second when sophomore Andrew Geislinger went yard with a two-run homer – the first home run of his collegiate career – to plate Michael Hommes and briefly put the Warriors out front 2-1.
The lead was short-lived, however, as St. Mary's answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to reclaim a 3-2 lead. St. Mary's then opened the game up with a grand slam off WSU starter Will Lundquist to take a 7-2 lead.
St. Mary's scored another run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-2 before the Warriors played long ball again in the top of the eighth when Tyler Nehring hit his first home run of the season to left field to make it 8-3. St. Mary's would add three more runs in the bottom of the inning to claim the 11-3 victory.
The Warriors recorded eight hits in the game, with two coming off the bat of sophomore Jesus Cazares, who had a fourth-inning double and an eighth-inning single.
Winona State (0-3) concludes its four-game season-opening road trip with a final game at Minute Maid Park Sunday at 2 p.m. vs. Henderson State in Houston.
