Hommes' Grand Slam Highlights Split With Wayne State (Mich.)

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Sophomore outfielder Michael Hommes crushed his first career grand slam in the winning game of a doubleheader against Wayne State (Mich.) Saturday morning. The Warriors won the first game 11-9 over Wayne State before dropping the second game 7-6 in eight innings.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Warriors got ahead early. Mitch Heid blasted an RBI triple and Taylor Field knocked him in with an RBI double in the second inning to give the Warriors an early 2-0 lead.

Winona State followed it up with a huge third inning by putting together an eight run inning. Warriors started out the scoring with Travis Evanson reaching on an error that scored a run and back-to-back bases loaded walks for Nathan Krause and Field made it a 5-0 game.

That was when Hommes came to the plate and crushed a grand slam to left center field to blow the game open and give the Warriors a 9-0 lead. Winona State added one more run in the fourth on a Krause fielder's choice ground out to give the Warriors a 10-0 lead.

Wayne State would rally back in the fifth and sixth innings. They would score two runs in the fifth inning and put together a five run sixth inning to cut the Winona State lead to 10-7.

The Warriors would get an insurance run from their first baseman though, as Evanson crushed his first home run of the season to give Winona State an 11-7 lead.

Wayne State would get two more runs in the top of the seventh to cut it to an 11-9 game, but pitcher Hayden Krimmer got the tying run at the plate to fly out and allow the Warriors to pick up their second win of the season.

Jay Voter picked up his first win of the season by pitching five innings, giving up nine hits and just one earned run with a walk and three strikeouts. Hommes led the Warriors bats by going 1-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored on his grand slam.

The Warriors gave Wayne State a battle, but Wayne State won on a walkoff single in the bottom of the eighth inning to get the 7-6 win.

Down 1-0 in the second inning, Evanson hit his second home run of the season to make it 1-1. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Field hit a single and advanced to second on an error that cleared the bases and gave the Warriors a 4-1 lead.

Winona State added another run in the third inning on a Heid double to the right center field gap to make it 5-1.

Wayne State rallied with four runs in the fourth inning to tie the game up at 5-5 before Evanson came through for the Warriors again. Evanson slammed his second home run of the game to center field in the fifth inning to give the Warriors the 6-5 lead yet again.

Wayne State managed to tie the game up yet again in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double to make it 6-6 and the game would go into extra innings. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Wayne State came up with three consecutive singles and get the win over the Warriors to close out the day.

Evanson had a big day for Winona State, going 4-for-4 from the plate with two homers, two RBIs, and three runs scored.

With the split, the Warriors moved to 2-10 to close out their non-conference schedule. Next up for Winona State is the conference opener, as they will host Bemidji State for a pair of doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday at Loughrey Field. First pitch for each game will be at noon on both Saturday and Sunday.
