Warriors Earn Doubleheader Split With Beavers In Home Opener

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State baseball team opened its 2015 home slate with a doubleheader split against Bemidji State, dropping the opener 3-1 before pounding out a season-high 15 hits in a 12-2 nightcap victory.

The Warriors' bats heated up in game two, as WSU scored runs in the game's first four innings to take an 8-0 lead and didn't look back. The Beavers answered with a run in each of the next two innings, but WSU answered back with a pair in the seventh and two more in the eighth to earn the 10-run victory after eight innings.

Warrior starter Hayden Krimmer (1-2) was fantastic on the mound for WSU, earning his first victory of the season after pitching seven innings while giving up just four hits and one earned run with only one walk while fanning seven.

Freshman Kipp Youngquist led the Warriors with 3 RBI and a pair of hits, while Michael Hommes added two hits and 2 RBI. Six Warriors recorded a multi-hit game in all.

Winona State struggled to put runs on the board in the opener despite a solid performance on the mound from senior ace Chase Blazier.  Blazier went seven innings while giving up six hits and just wto earned runs while striking out a pair.

Bemidji State scored one off Blazier in the first and added a two-run home run in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead. Jesus Cazares cut into the lead in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single as part of a two-hit game to make it 3-1, but the score would remain the same throughout the remainder of the seven-inning opener.

Winona State (3-11, 1-1 NSIC) returns to Loughrey Field Saturday for another doubleheader against Bemidji State at noon in Winona.
