Season-High 14 Runs In Nightcap Leads Warriors To Split With BSU

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State baseball team posted a season-high 14 runs in the second game of a Saturday doubleheader to salvage a series split with Bemidji State at Loughrey Field.

For the second straight day the first game of the doubleheader was a quiet one offensively for the Warriors, mustering just one run in each opener and suffering a 5-1 loss Saturday, but the Warrior bats exploded for 14 runs in a 14-8 game two victory Saturday after posting a 12-2 win in the nightcap on Friday.

After dropping the first game 5-1, the Warriors found themselves in yet another 5-1 deficit after two innings in game two as the Beavers scored three runs in the first and two more the following inning. WSU chipped into the lead however in the fifth, as Mitchell Heid produced a single through the right side to score Travis Evanson and make it 5-2.

After Bemidji State added another in the fifth, WSU answered with three runs to cut the lead to 6-5 after Michael Hommes scored on a bases loaded double play, Andrew Geislinger crossed the plate thanks to a throwing error by the shortstop and Jordan Plamann scored when Tyler Nehring came through with an RBI single.

Bemidji State added two more runs in the sixth with a pair of solo home runs, but the Warriors did even more damage in the bottom of the sixth with a five run inning – all with two outs. Evanson got the scoring started by drawing a bases-loaded walk, and Plamann added a 2 RBI single that scored a third on a throwing error before Nehring tripled to right field to score Plamann and put WSU up 10-8.

The redshirt freshman Heid added some big-time insurance in the bottom of the eighth with a grand slam for the first home run of his WSU career and four of his five RBI in the game.

Winona State freshman reliever Mitchell Stalsberg would shut the door emphatically in the game's final stretch, taking over for Will Lundquist – who earned the win after pitching four innings in relief of starter Jay Voter. But Stalsberg earned the impressive three-inning save, striking out 10 batters without allowing a hit to close the game.

Jesus Cazares scored the lone run for the Warriors in game one with a solo shot in the fourth inning to give WSU a 1-0 lead, but BSU answered with a run in the fifth and four in the sixth to earn the 5-1 win.

Winona State (4-12) continues its 10-game homestand to open conference play next weekend with a four-game series with the University of Mary Saturday and Sunday with first pitches at noon both days at Loughrey Field.
