Warriors Use Long Ball To Propel Past Marauders 5-1, 13-3

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State baseball team hit four homers in two games to come away with 5-1 and 13-3 wins over the University of Mary on Saturday at Loughrey Field.

Not only was the Warrior offense lethal, but the Warriors rallied behind two complete game pitching performances.

Winona State got a strong performance out of Chase Blazier in the first game, picking up his first win of the season in a 5-1 win.

The Marauders got on the board first though on an RBI single by Will Pettener, but was picked off at first base by Warrior catcher Nathan Krause to get out of the inning and limit the damage.

The Warriors immediately answered in the bottom of the first. With Michael Hommes on first, Andrew Geislinger smashed a double to left center to tie the game up at 1-1. Two batters later, Travis Evanson crushed a home run to deep right field onto Maxwell Field to give Winona State a 3-1 lead.

The Warriors would get some insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded and one out, Taylor Field hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Jordan Plamann from third to make it a 4-1 lead. Hommes added to the lead with an RBI single in the next at-bat to make it 5-1.

Blazier cruised through the first six innings, but ran into trouble in the top of the seventh. Blazier gave up back-to-back first pitch singles to Mary to put runners on first and second with no out.

However, Warrior shortstop Tyler Nehring delivered big time on the defensive end,  snagging a catch on a on line drive and tagging the runner at second to record a double play. Blazier induced a fly out to left in the next at-bat to help the Warriors pull out the win.

Blazier finished the game pitching a strong seven innings, giving up just one earned run on four hits and two walks while registering four strikeouts.

Plamann led the Warrior bats going 3-for-3 with a run scored and Evanson went 1-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs. Hommes also had a multi-hit game going 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.

In the second game, the Warriors found themselves down early again, but not for long. After Mary scored in the top of the first, the Warriors answered as Jesus Cazares knocked in an RBI single to score Geislinger to make it a 1-1 game.

The Warrior offense exploded in the second inning, scoring eight runs total. The scoring started when Taylor Field crushed a grand slam to right field to give the Warriors a 5-1 advantage.

Five batters later, Plamann continued his hot hitting by knocking in an RBI single to score Geislinger to make it a 6-1 game. The very next at-bat after having a home run hook foul earlier in the day, Nehring delivered a three-run blast to left field to bring the Warrior lead to 9-1.

Nehring would not be done with the long ball either. After the Marauders scored in the top of the third, Nehring would launch another homer just over the left field fence in the bottom of the fourth to make it 10-2.

After Mary clawed back with another run to make it 10-3 in the top of the fifth, Evanson drove in a run on an RBI double to make it 11-3.

In the bottom of the sixth, Winona State would score two more runs. Catcher Nathan Krause lined a double to right center field to score Nehring to make it 12-3. With runners at first and second and one out, Hommes hit a fly ball to right field that was caught. The runners tagged and advanced to the next base, as Krause scored on a throwing error to make it 13-3.

After pitching a strong game throughout, Krimmer pitched a lights out seventh inning, striking out all three batters he faced to give the Warriors the victory.

Krimmer picked up his second win of the season, pitching seven innings while giving up three earned runs on seven hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Nehring, who went 4-for-4 from the plate with two home runs, four RBIs, and four runs scored, led the Warrior offense. Field also went 1-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs as well.

With the wins, Winona State improved to 6-12 on the season and 4-2 in NSIC play. The Warriors will take on Mary to finish off a weekend double-header on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Loughrey Field.
