No. 20 Warriors Open NSIC Play With 2-0 Win Over Upper Iowa

FAYETTE, Iowa – The No. 20 Winona State soccer team passed its first road test of the season, improving to 4-0 on the year with a 2-0 victory over Upper Iowa Monday afternoon in Fayette.

The Warriors and Peacocks were locked in a scoreless tie after the first half of play, but WSU had a distinct advantage, controlling an 11-5 advantage in shots and forcing Upper Iowa goalkeeper Kaitlyn Emanuel to make six saves.

But WSU struck first early in the second half when senior Kati Baker scored her 10th career goal and what would prove to be the game winner off a rebound just a minute and a half into the period and it would be all the Warriors needed.

While freshman Abby Bohanski didn't get credit for a fourth straight game-winning goal, she did score for the fourth straight game to open her WSU career. WSU added an insurance goal in the 66th minute when Kelsey Foss sent a ball in from midfield and Bohanski headed the shot past Emanuel for the goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Oleson was rock solid between the posts for the Warriors, making a number of tough saves in the final 20 minutes to preserve the shutout and the victory. Oleson made all eight saves to improve to 4-0 on the year.

The Warriors peppered the Peacocks with 25 shots, with a season high 13 shots on goal and had a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Winona State (4-0) returns home this weekend for a pair of NSIC matchups. The Warriors host Wayne State Saturday and Augustana Sunday, with both games set for 1 p.m. at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium.
