WAYNE, Neb. – The No. 22 Winona State volleyball team fell to No. 5 Wayne State in straight sets (25-21, 28-26, 25-22) Friday night in Rice Auditorium.
Taylor Goar continued her string of strong play, leading the Warriors with a match-high 20 kills along with 16 kills for her fifth straight double-double.
Danielle Rampart, back in the lineup after missing a pair of matches, narrowly missed a double-double, tallying nine kills and 16 digs.
The Warriors statistically hit for the highest percentage in the opening set at .239, but so did the Wildcats, hitting at a .351 clip. The Wildcats jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead and later held a 14-10 advantage, but the Warriors used a quick 4-0 spurt to tie it at 14-14. WSC answered with six of the next eight points and won the opener 25-21.
WSU had opportunities to even the match in the second set. With Wayne State controlling a late 23-21 advantage, kills from Rampart and Lauren Kudronowicz evened the score and a WSC attack error gave the Warriors a set point. WSU later fought off two set points but the Wildcats eventually took the set 28-26.
Neither team hit for a high percentage, with both managing just .125, but Wayne State earned the victory with a 25-22 win to claim the 3-0 victory.
Kudronowicz finished with eight kills and hit .240, while Jamie Cairncross tallied 17 digs for the Warriors.
Winona State (7-4, 1-3 NSIC) takes on its third ranked opponent in four matches when it travels to Sioux Falls, S.D. to face No. 22 Augustana Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
