DULUTH, Minn. – The No. 25 Winona State soccer team got back on track with a 2-0 victory over rival Minnesota Duluth Sunday afternoon at Maloksy Stadium in Duluth.
The Warriors got an important early goal when senior Kati Baker netted her second of the season in the 12th minute when she hit in a rebound off a shot from Abby Bohanski to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead, a lead that would hold until halftime.
The Warriors dominated the first half of play, collecting 12 shots, five of which were on goal, while holding the Bulldogs to just one shot and without a shot on goal.
Trailing by a goal, UMD upped the pressure in the second half, outshooting WSU 8-7, but were never able to break through against WSU goalkeeper Rachel Oleson, who recorded her fourth shutout of the season while needing to make just three saves.
The Warriors added a late insurance goal in the 88th minute when Bohanski scored her team-leading sixth of the season by rebounding in a crossing pass that was punched out by the goalie for the 2-0 lead.
WSU held a 19-9 advantage in shots in the game and a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Bohanski and Meg Riebau each had a game-leading five shots in the game, while Riebau's three shots on goal was the most from either team.
Winona State (6-2, 3-2 NSIC) is back on the road next weekend when it takes on Minot State and U-Mary on Saturday and Sunday.
