Freshmen Help Warriors Erase 2-Goal Deficit, Beat Michigan Tech

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State soccer team rebounded from a 2-0 deficit to post a 3-2 victory over Michigan Tech in a nonconference season opener in front of 372 fans at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium in Winona.

The Huskies' Lexi Herrewig netted a pair of first half goals to stake Michigan Tech to a 2-0 lead, but freshman Kirsten Windbiel responded with a beautiful unassisted long-range strike with two seconds left in the half to bring the Warriors to within one headed into the halftime break.

Senior defender Kelsey Foss got in on the offense in the 58th minute to score the equalizer and knot the game at 2-2, and the score would hold up until the 79th minute when Mehan Bolton set the stage for freshman heroics yet again, as Abby Bohanski netted the would-be game-winning goal.

The Warriors peppered Husky goalie Jenna Phelps with 25 shots – 19 of which came in the second half - with 12 shots landing on goal. Michigan Tech, meanwhile, took 11 shots – including just three in the second half – while 12 landed on goal in the game.

Kati Baker led the Warriors in shots on goal with three, while Chase Rehm, Bohanski and Bolton each had a pair. The Warriors also held a 7-1 advantage on corner kicks.

WSU goalkeeper Rachel Oleson was credited with four saves in the victory, while Phelps made nine.

Winona State (1-0) returns to Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium Sunday for a noon matchup with Northern Michigan.
