GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The Winona State earned a weekend split to open NSIC competition, falling to Bemidji State 7-2 Friday before rebounding with its first win of the season in an 8-1 win over Minnesota Crookston in Grand Forks, N.D.
The Warriors earned wins at the top of the singles lineup against the Beavers, with their top two singles players finishing off the Beavers in third set tiebreaks. Justine Daane defeated Bemidji State's Shaylin Prout 6-1, 4-6, 10-5 while Rachel Gantz rebounded from a tough first set to post a 1-6, 6-4, 10-4 win.
The script was flipped in the Warriors' favor against the Golden Eagles, as WSU won at every spot but No. 1 singles, where Daane dropped a hard-fought 6-2, 4-6, 11-9 decision. But the Warriors were dominant everywhere else, with Gantz picking up a 6-1, 6-3 win, Hattie Scott earning a 6-0, 6-3 victory, Lauren Willkom and Keara Thiele each picking up 6-2, 6-0 wins and Melissa Boehmke recording a perfect 6-0, 6-0 decision.
The Warriors swept doubles competition as well, with Daane and Gantz winning 8-3 at No. 1 doubles, Scott and Thiele earning an 8-2 win and Boehmke and Willkom victorious at the No. 3 doubles spot.
The Warriors travel to Sioux Falls, S.D. next weekend to take on Minnesota State at 9 a.m. Saturday and Southwest Minnesota State at 1 p.m. Sunday.
