BOLIVAR, Mo. – The Winona State baseball team dropped its third and final game in of its season-opening series with Southwest Baptist Saturday, as the Bearcats scored two eighth inning runs to rally past the Warriors 7-6.
Unlike in Friday's games, the Warriors jumped out to the early lead this time around, as Jesus Cazares picked up a first inning RBI single and Tyler Nehring smashed a two-run home run in the third inning to stake the Warriors and starter Jay Voter to an early 3-0 lead.
The Bearcats battled back with a three-run fifth inning, but the top of the sixth saw the Warriors plate two more runners on an RBI double from Andrew Geislinger and Cazares' second RBI single of the day to move back in front 5-3.
SBU would have another answer, albeit unconventionally, scoring on a wild pitch and an unearned run on a single to knot the score at 5-5.
An RBI double from Kipp Youngquist in the top of the seventh put the Warriors out front again, but a sacrifice fly and another wild pitch in the bottom of the frame moved the Bearcats back in front for the final time to earn the 7-6 win.
Voter pitched five innings, giving up six hits and two earned rusn with a pair of strikeouts. Brett Herber was saddled with the loss, giving up a pair of runs in two innings of work.
Winona State (1-2) makes another trip to Missouri in two weeks, when it takes on Maryville, Grand Valley State and Drury on Feb. 26-28 in St. Louis.
