ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The Winona State baseball team shut out Maryville Friday afternoon in the first game of the Maryville Classic on the campus of Lindenwood University in a cold and windy St. Charles, Missouri.
Mitchell Stalsberg (1-1) earned the win on the mound, giving up just two hits while walking six but fanning eight batters in six innings of work. Brett Herber pitched a pair of innings, allowing just one hit, while Mitch Voter pitched a scoreless ninth as the trio combined for the shutout victory.
Joe Kubera led the Warriors with a 4-for-5 performance at the plate with a run scored, while Tyler Nehring went 3-for-5Â and Jesus Cazares and Taylor Field each went 2-for-4. Cazares and Michael Hommes each recorded 2 RBI.
The Warriors scored early as Nehring recorded a two-out double to right field and Cazres brought him home with a single to put the Warriors up 1-0. The Warriors pushed the lead to 2-0 the following inning when Taylor Field doubled down the line in the left field and Hommes singled him home.
WSU stretched the lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth when Field tripled to left center setting up an RBI groundout for Hommes.
The score would remain 3-0 until the top of the ninth when WSU when the Warriors tacked on a pair of insurance runs with a sac fly by Cazares to score Kubera and a Voter single to plate Andrew Geislinger as the Warriors cruised to the 5-0 victory.
The Warriors (2-2) play a pair of games Saturday, taking on Drury at 11 a.m. before playing Grand Valley State at 2:30 p.m.
