ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The Winona State baseball team fell to Drury 6-4 Sunday at Lou Brock Complex in St. Charles, Missouri.
Jesus Cazares led the Warriors with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate with a pair of RBI.
The Warriors scored an unearned run in the top of the first when Cazares reached base on a throwing error that allowed Joe Kubera to score for a 1-0 lead.
Drury tied it up in the third with an RBI groundout and the score would remain tied at 1-1 until the seventh when Drury broke through with a two-run triple and an RBI sac bunt to take a 4-1 lead.
WSU fought back in the top of the eighth, as singles from Kubera and Tyler Nehring set up a two-run double by Cazares to pull the Warriors to within one at 4-3. The Warriors would continue to threaten as WSU had the bases loaded with two outs but a Ryan Nyhagen groundout ended the inning.
Drury added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-3 and Andrew Geislinger recorded an RBI single to center field to score Kipp Youngquist and pull within 6-4, but couldn't complete the rally.
Josh Nielsen (0-1) pitched seven innings, scattering nine hits and giving up four runs with four strikeouts and a walk.
Winona State (2-5) heads to Florida for six games in the Sunshine State, beginning Saturday with a matchup against Seton Hill (Pa.) at 8 a.m. (CST)
