AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Winona State baseball team split a pair of games on the final day of its Florida trip, falling to Ohio Dominican 11-9 before rebounding for an 8-1 victory over Saint Joseph's (IN).
GAME ONE: Ohio Dominican 11, WSU 9
Offense was abundant in the first game of the day as the two squads combined for 29 hits and 20 runs, but the Warriors couldn't complete a late rally in an 11-9 loss.
The Warriors fell behind early and had to play catchup throughout the game as ODU scored three runs in the top of the first. A two-run single through the left side by Mitch Voter quickly cut it to 3-2 and WSU responded to an ODU run in the top of the third with one in the bottom of the inning on a Jesus Cazares RBI groundout.
The Panthers extended their lead with a four-run fifth inning, but a Michael Hommes right field solo home run in the bottom of the inning kept the Warriors within striking distance down 8-5.
Ohio Dominican again created some breathing room with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth, but WSU rallied in the bottom of the inning with four runs. Voter opened the scoring with an RBI single to left field, then Ryan Nyhagen followed up with a single up the middle to score Jesus Cazares. Joe Kubera then singled to left field to score Voter and cut the lead to 11-9, but the Panthers got out of the inning and a scoreless ninth inning sealed the ODU win.
GAME TWO: WSU 8, Saint Joseph's 1
WSU scored first and led the entire way to end its Florida trip with an 8-1 win over Saint Joseph's.
Kubera led off the game with a double to left center field and later scored on a wild pitch before a Voter RBI made it 2-0.
SJC got a run back in the bottom of the first, but WSU pushed a run across in the third and fourth innings – an RBI single from Cazares and an RBI triple from Hommes – to make it 4-1. WSU extended the lead with runs in each of the game's final three innings. Cazares picked up his second RBI of the game in the seventh to score Tyler Nehring, Hommes and Kubera had run-scoring hits in the eighth and Mitchell Heid had an RBI sac fly in the ninth as WSU cruised to the win.
Brett Herber (1-1) earned his first win giving up just the one run and striking out three batters and scattering eight hits in six innings of work. WSU's bullpen performed well, with brothers Jay and Mitch Voter combining for three perfect innings with seven strikeouts combined.
WSU opens NSIC play on March 25 and 26 hosting a pair of doubleheaders against Minnesota Crookston at noon each day at Loughrey Field in Winona.
