LAKELAND, Fla. – The Winona State baseball team had a lead through six and a half innings but a late rally propelled No. 17 Florida Southern to a 4-2 win over the Warriors Wednesday afternoon in Lakeland, Florida.
After three scoreless innings, WSU scored first in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs. With runners on second and third and one out, a fielding error from FSC's second baseman off the bat of Mitchell Heid allowed both Mitch Voter and Jesus Cazares to score and hand the Warriors a 2-0 lead.
Florida Southern cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single, but the Warriors clung to the narrow lead until the bottom of the seventh, when a pair of RBI singles put the home team up for the first time, 3-2, before a passed ball in the eighth inning provided an insurance run and an eventual 4-2 victory.
FSC had 10 hits in the game, while the Warriors managed six. Taylor Field went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Cazares, Voter, Joe Kubera and Ryan Nyhagen also added base hits.
Mitchell Stalsberg pitched well on the mound for the Warriors, scattering eight hits through 6.2 innings pitched with three earned runs, three walks and two strikeouts. Voter pitched a 1.1 innings in relief, allowing two hits and no earned runs with a strikeout.
Winona State (2-9) ends its Florida trip Thursday with a pair of games against Ohio Dominican and Saint Jospeph's (Ind.) at 1:30 p.m. (CST) and 5 p.m.
