Warriors Blast 8 Homers in 21-3 Win; Earn Split With Wayne State

WAYNE, Neb. – The Winona State baseball team scored a combined 32 runs but managed a split with Wayne State Wednesday afternoon at Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne, Nebraska.

GAME ONE: Wayne State 15, WSU 11

The Warriors and Wildcats combined for 26 runs and 32 hits in the opener, but Wayne State came out on top with the 15-11 victory.

The Warriors scored early and often, but so did WSC as the Wildcats led 10-8 after just three innings. WSU scored three in the first inning on RBI doubles by Ryan Nyhagen and Mitch Voter, who eventually scored on a fielding error. But WSC answered back quickly with a six-spot in the bottom of the inning.

WSU quickly tied it back up in the top of the second on a three-run home run by Voter and briefly took an 8-6 lead in the third on a two-run triple by Joe Kubera. Four more Wildcat runs in the bottom of the third put them back out in front 10-8 before a scoreless fourth inning.

A two-run double by Kubera knotted it up yet again at 10-10 after the top of the fifth, but Wayne State answered again with two in the fifth and three more in the sixth to put the game away. Kipp Youngquist picked up an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh but the Wildcats earned the 15-11 win.

Kubera was a home run shy of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with 4 RBI, while Voter went 2-for-4 with 4 RBI.

GAME TWO: WSU 21, Wayne State 3

The Warriors dominated the nightcap, blasting eight home runs and racking up the most runs in a single game in nearly four years en route to a 21-3 drubbing.

WSU last scored 21 runs in a game against Bemidji State on April 28, 2012. Earlier that season the Warriors scored 35 in a win over Northern State.

The Warriors scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back thanks to a three-run bomb by Tyler Nehring and another solo home run by Taylor Field. The Warriors continued the long ball in the second, tacking on three more runs with a two-run shot by Jesus Cazares and a solo home run by Mitch Voter to open up a quick 7-0 lead.

Ryan Nyhagen added an RBI single in the third to up the lead to 8-0 before a scoreless fourth inning. But the WSU offense was just warming up, as it would score 13 runs in the next two innings to open up a 21-0 lead. After an RBI triple by Nathan Krause and an RBI single from Andrew Geislinger, Cazares and Nehring each hit their second home runs of the game – 3-run and 2-run home runs, respectively – to stretch the lead to 15-0 after five.

WSU kept up the power game in the sixth, as Voter and Field each hit their second home runs of the game as well to keep the rout going. The Wildcats finally broke up the shutout with a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh, but WSU cruised to the big 21-3 victory.

Brett Herber (2-2) picked up the complete game victory, scattering nine hits with just the one mistake – the three-run home run. The freshman struck out three while walking two batters. The Wildcats, meanwhile, trotted out a different pitcher to start each inning, using seven in total.

Cazares and Nehring led the Warriors with 5 RBI a piece, while Mitch Voter was a perfect 5-for-5 with 3 RBI as the senior jumped to the team lead with a .398 batting average on the season.

Winona State (10-18, 7-8 NSIC) travels to Bismarck, N.D. to take on U-Mary for a pair of noon doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
