Warrior Baseball Splits Doubleheader with SMSU

WINONA, Minn. -- The Winona State baseball team split a Thursday afternoon doubleheader with Southwest Minnesota State, winning the opener 8-2 before falling in the nightcap 11-5 in a pair of games moved to Winona due to weather.

GAME ONE: WSU 8, SMSU 2

The Warriors received a complete game pitching performance for the second time this week and season, this time from Josh Nielsen (1-2), who picked up his first win of the year. The sophomore scattered seven hits throughout his seven innings of work while striking out nine batters, walking just one and allowing two earned runs.

A sacrifice fly from Mitch Voter scored Ryan Nyhagen to give the Warriors an early 1-0 lead before a seven-run third inning put the game out of reach early. Jesus Cazares and Mitch Voter each had RBI singles before Taylor Field cleared the bases with a double to left center field to extend the lead to 6-0. The Warriors weren't done in the inning, as Nathan Krause and Joe Kubera picked up two more run-scoring singles to make it 8-0.

SMSU finally got on the board in the sixth inning when Derek Branson launched a two-run home run but it was too little, too late as WSU cruised to the 8-2 seven inning victory.

GAME TWO: SMSU 11, WSU 5

The Mustangs jumped on WSU starter Parker Holmstrom (0-1) early on to take a quick lead and never look back to salvage the split. SMSU scored three runs in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout and a pair of run-scoring doubles. The Mustangs added to the lead in the third when a throwing error on a slow dribbler up the first base line allowed a run to score and a two-run home run followed to push the lead to 6-0.

Another home run in the fourth made it 7-0 before Joe Kubera recorded a sacrifice fly in the fifth to score Nathan Krause and make it 7-1, but another error in the bottom of the inning made it 8-1.

A two-run home run to center off the bat of Taylor Field cut the deficit to 8-3, but the Mustangs answered with an RBI single in the seventh and a pair of runs in the eighth. The Warriors scored a pair in the top of the ninth on a RBI double down the left field line by Joe Kubera, who eventually scored on a wild pitch, but the Warriors fell 11-5 to finish with the series split.

Winona State (6-16, 3-6 NSIC) heads to Bemidji State on Saturday and Sunday for a pair of noon doubleheaders.
