Warriors Fall to Concordia 15-9, 15-4

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State baseball team dropped a home doubleheader to Concordia-St. Paul on a steamy Friday afternoon at Loughrey Field in Winona. The Warriors dropped the opener 15-9 before falling 15-4 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: CSP 15, WSU 9

The Golden Bears stormed out to a 12-1 lead through three innings and never looked back en route to the 15-9 victory.

A trio of RBI extra base hits to the gap helped Concordia to an early 4-0 first inning lead. Jesus Cazares brought home Ryan Nyhagen to cut it to 4-1, but the Golden Bears kept up the offense going with two in the second and assembled a six-run third inning to pull ahead 12-1.

Mitch Voter hit his 14th home run of the season in the top of the fourth, and after CSP got the run back in the top of the fifth, WSU attempted a comeback with a five-run fifth inning thanks in part to a lack of control from the Golden Bear arms. Voter brought home a run after being hit by a pitch before Tyler Nehring coaxed a bases loaded walk.

Taylor Field picked up a two-run single to cut the deficit to 13-6 before Andrew Geislinger scored Nehring on a sacrifice fly to make it 13-7.

Concordia scored two more in the sixth, but so did the Warriors on Voter's second home run of the game to make the 15-9 final.

GAME TWO: CSP 15, WSU 4

After a pair of scoreless innings, the two teams plated a run apiece in the third. After a solo home run from the Golden Bears, the Warriors benefited from a fielding error to score Taylor Field to even it at 1-1.

The teams remained tied through four, but Concordia pulled ahead with another big inning, this time a five-run fifth to take a 6-1 lead. An RBI single from Ryan Nyhagen in the sixth cut it to 6-2, but CSP banged a three-run homer in the seventh and scored six runs in the eighth to cruise to another big 15-2 lead.

The Warriors mounted a threat in the eighth and scored a pair of runs on wild pitches, but it wasn't enough to stave off the 10-run rule as the Golden Bears earned the sweep with the eight-inning win.

WSU (17-28-1, 14-18-1 NSIC) closes out the regular season with another doubleheader against Concordia at noon Saturday at Loughrey Field.
