Winona State Unveils Alternate Athletics Logo

WINONA, Minn. – Winona State Athletics has introduced a new word mark logo to represent the 15 programs within the department.  This logo will serve as an alternate logo when a horizontal graphic is needed or when teams would like the name of the institution to be prevalent on their apparel.  The Warrior Head and Warrior Head Badge Logo will continue to serve as the primary and secondary logos for Winona State Athletics.

Winona State Athletic Director, Eric Schoh feels that the Warrior Athletics programs will enjoy having another option when ordering apparel.  "This new logo will allow each team to represent Winona State University and the Winona community proudly.  The Warrior Head and the Warrior Head Badge Logo are iconic logos and we look forward to continuing to use those, along with our new alternate logo, to build our brand within our region and beyond."

The logo was designed by staff members of the Winona State Athletic Department and was a collaborative effort by the administration.  Chris Kautza, Assistant Athletic Director said the Winona community played a big role in the design process. "We wanted to create a logo that captured the imagery of our region and highlight the importance of the Winona community to Warriors Athletics.  The people in and around Winona are great supporters of the Warriors, and we wanted them to feel part of the new alternate logo."  There are a few design elements within the new alternate logo that make up the connection between Warrior Athletics and the community of Winona:

Foundation of the Design
The framework for the design was the graphic on the front of the NCAA Championship Basketball jerseys the Warriors wore during their historic run to two National Championships in 2006 and 2008.  The new logo features the word "Winona" in larger text than the word "State", just as it was on those jerseys.

The Bridge
Many community members and people in the Winona area are familiar with the importance of the interstate bridge in Winona.  Not only does the bridge play a huge role in the economy and connects Winona to the surrounding region.  In addition, the construction of the new bridge will play an important role in the future of Winona.  The "W" and "A" in the new logo serve as the pillars and the white behind the middle of the word "Winona" represents the interstate bridges in the logo.

The Railroad Tracks
Everyone who has visited or lived in Winona knows the importance and presence of the railroad in Winona.  The purple between the letters in the new logo highlight the railroad's place in the Winona community by making rails and tracks throughout the word "Winona".

The River
Finally, no mention of the Winona community would be complete without highlighting the Mississippi River.  The white space within the word "State" shows the river's presence and standing in Winona and our region of the country.  It also appears below the "bridge" in the new logo.

Any questions regarding the use or application of the new logo can be directed to Assistant Athletic Director, Chris Kautza, or Director of Athletics Communications, Stephen Batcher.
